Who doesn’t love smoothies? Healthy smoothies make a fantastic breakfast and a wholesome snack that people of all ages adore. There’s no need to load them up with artificial colors and sweeteners, either – they taste great with 100% natural ingredients!

I’ve selected three favorite smoothie recipes of mine that taste like they could be dessert. What more could you ask of healthy food?

Milkshakes are typically made with fat and sugar-filled ice cream, and while they might taste delicious, they aren’t going to promote great health. Here’s a dairy-free version that’s completely sinless, but tastes very similar to the rich milkshakes we all know and love.

The secret to this healthy “milkshake” is the frozen bananas, which take on a dreamy ice cream-like consistency when blended. Peel, chop and freeze the bananas before bed, and this smoothie is a breeze to prepare for breakfast!

Add the chia seeds for some extra-healthy oomph if you desire. These flavorless seeds contain healthy omega-3 fats, iron, protein and calcium.

Ingredients:
2 medium bananas, frozen
1 c. whole strawberries, fresh or frozen
1 c. non-dairy milk
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1 tbsp chia seeds (optional)

Directions:
Blend all ingredients in a blender until smooth, adjusting the ratio of non-dairy milk to the consistency you enjoy.

Chai tea is one of my all-time favorite drinks, both in its hot tea form and dressed up as a latte. One summer afternoon, I was craving chai flavors but couldn’t bear the thought of turning on my hot water kettle on an already sweltering day. So I concocted this simple smoothie, using basic chai spices that most of us have kicking around in our cupboards.

Ingredients:
1 banana, frozen
1 c. non-dairy milk
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground ginger
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/4 tsp allspice
1/4 tsp cardamom

Directions:
Blend all ingredients in a blender until smooth. This is a fairly thin, milky smoothie so if you want something thicker, feel free to add less non-dairy milk to the mix.

This healthy smoothie goes banana-free, opting instead for a sweet and juicy mango to provide a smooth, creamy texture. The addition of rich coconut butter takes this to tropical heights, but it’s just as good without it if you haven’t got this fun condiment, found at many health food stores.

Note that coconut butter isn’t the same as coconut oil. Coconut butter is made from blended coconut meat, while coconut oil is the oil derived from coconut meat.

Ingredients:
1 mango, peeled and sliced
1 c. strawberries, frozen
1 c. non-dairy milk
1 tbsp coconut butter (optional)

Directions:
Blend all ingredients in a blender until smooth. Adjust the non-dairy milk ratio to your personal preference.

If you have fresh strawberries instead of frozen, you can still make this recipe – just add a couple ice cubes to the blender.

There’s no need to spend tons of money on watered-down smoothies when you can make your own delicious healthy smoothies right in the comfort of your own home! Smoothies are fairly foolproof, too, so have fun experimenting with different fruits and flavor combinations.
